Many people who have suffered a stroke are unaware of what signs to look for that indicate their condition has progressed to a more serious state. Because the symptoms of a stroke can be similar to those of a heart attack, many people do not realize they are notifying the proper person about something they should. If you are aware of these signs then you may be able to help the medical personnel with managing the situation and possibly stopping the progression of the stroke. One of the most critical first steps is to notify your doctor or the emergency room right away. The more help you have, the sooner you will get to a hospital where you will receive adequate care and begin recovering.
The three most common stroke symptoms are lack of oxygen and circulation to the brain, decreased flow through the blood vessels supplying the brain, and lack of circulation in the brain itself. A lack of oxygen related symptom is often referred to as a “stroke fog.” These are the most common causes of death related to cardiovascular illnesses. Understanding the signs associated with each of these three strokes can help you understand how you may be treating yourself.
The first sign to look for is a temporary loss of consciousness. This type of symptom can be caused by many things including a lack of oxygen or a blockage in the blood vessels. A feeling of numbness, tingling, or leg weakness is another sign to look for. If you have had a previous stroke you may have developed some of this habit. However, you are likely to experience some numbness and leg weakness directly after you suffer a stroke.
The second sign to look for is the onset of weakness in one or more of the senses. This is probably the most important symptom to note since it affects all of the senses. The first symptoms that will appear are probably blurred vision. This blurred vision is caused by the blood vessels becoming incapable of allowing enough blood to flow through. If you suffer these first symptoms you should immediately call 911 or rush to the emergency room.
Another of the more common symptoms is sudden numbness or tingling in one side of the body. This numbness often occurs only on one side of your body, but it does happen in more than one percent of cases. Sudden numbness in one side of your body can indicate a problem with the nerve, muscles, or tendons that control either your arm or leg.
One of the more unusual symptoms is facial weakness. This symptom is usually seen in older people who have suffered a heart attack or stroke. Facial weakness is actually the first symptom to appear because it causes a lack of sensation in the facial area. The remaining side will become less sensitive to touch, making it easier to stroke someone. Since facial weakness is often caused by nerve damage, it means that the person has already lost sensation in one side of their face.
One other Stroke symptom is called TBI (Traumatic brain injury). A TBI is an injury to the head that causes bleeding and sometimes death. The most common type of TBI is a closed angle brain injury. This means there was really some force hitting the victim’s brain, and it could be either during a violent fall or during a blow to the head during the struggle to get away. Common symptoms of a closed angle TBI include memory loss, dizziness, fainting, or paralysis. A traumatic brain injury victim may also suffer from a TBI related symptom called a rebound headache which appears several days after the initial pain.
Perhaps the most interesting Stroke symptom is called a hemorrhagic stroke. Hemorrhagic stroke is caused when a blood vessel in the brain becomes damaged. Common causes of hemorrhagic stroke include enlarged blood vessels (such as in a stroke related subdural hematoma) or a leak from the brain to the heart. Any type of bleeding in the brain should be monitored by a physician as this can be a serious but silent disease. A sudden appearance of a severe headache, nausea or a change in behavior (mental confusion or agitation) that has been unexplained after the occurrence of a headache may indicate that hemorrhagic stroke is present.
