Stroke Symptoms. If you are unsure as to what a stroke is, ask someone who has had one to raise both their arms to signal they are okay. Slurred speech may indicate the individual is having a stroke due to the stoppage of blood flow in the brain. T for time. If someone is already having stroke symptoms, then it is high time to act quickly.
Other symptoms of stroke might include: difficulty with speaking, tingling or numbness in the hands, trouble with moving bowels, and trouble with swallowing. Stroke symptoms don’t always mean that a stroke is in progress; sometimes they are merely indicators of an impending heart attack or heart failure. However, when any of these signs are experienced by the individual, it is wise to get to the doctor quickly in order to avoid the development of complications.
Stroke Symptoms – Two other signs of stroke are a severe headache and nausea. Sometimes, stroke symptoms will also cause fatigue, dizziness, or shortness of breath. These feelings are usually attributed to high blood pressure or high cholesterol. Individuals at a greater risk for these side effects should be tested for high blood pressure and cholesterol, as well.
Stroke Treatments – Depending on the type of stroke, there are many different treatments available to treat the symptoms of the disease. Medications can be taken to treat pain, including over-the-counter antiplatelets such as aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, and indomethacin; nonsteroidal antiplatelets such as nabumetone and acetazolamide; and corticosteroids, such as prednisone, hydrocortisone, and methylprednisolone. Hormone therapy has also shown promise in the treatment of post-stroke depression and anxiety.
Anti-platelet drugs have shown benefits in the treatment of those who suffer from either the headache associated with the stroke or the numbness and tingling sensations that can be caused by a stroke. These drugs affect platelet activity and in turn, decrease the amount of bleeding that occurs in the brain. The weakness and numbness caused by stroke symptoms can be alleviated by using antiplatelet medicines. They are not, however, a cure for the stroke itself and should only be used along with other methods such as lifestyle changes and therapy.
Other strokes can also cause similar signs and symptoms. For example, those who suffer from a partial stroke that affects movement of the arms or legs may also experience problems speaking, losing motor coordination, and problems with language. While many people tend to associate symptoms of these types of strokes with loss of speech ability, they can actually also have speech problems as a side effect. This can be a particularly frustrating issue for those who are experiencing it after suffering a traumatic event like a car accident. While it is impossible to predict what symptoms may occur after a certain type of incident, it is helpful to keep in mind that they are very common in all strokes.
Slurred speech is another of the more common stroke symptoms. Some people who have had a stroke can speak easily but struggle with slurred speech. It is difficult to determine if the slurred speech is caused by nerve damage or a lack of muscle coordination. Usually, once these symptoms start to show, they are only minor. However, if they are left untreated, they can lead to severe problems with speech.
Stroke symptoms can differ depending on the location and severity of the injury. If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with a stroke, make sure that you have a thorough discussion with your doctor on the risk factors that can increase the odds of the condition. Remember that there are many different causes of strokes including genetic issues, blood clots, high cholesterol levels, and other medical conditions. Your doctor should be able to help you understand them and what those risk factors are.
