Parkinson’s disease is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system which results in involuntary movements of the body. It was named after the physician who discovered it in 1817. The name Parkinson comes from the first Parkinson’s patient who was called Parkinson himself and it was his son who first diagnosed the disease.
Parkinson’s symptoms can be divided into four categories namely, rigidity of muscles, loss of muscle tone, wasting of tissues and fluid and bradykinesia. Rigid muscles are characterized by uncoordinated stiffening of muscles which cause involuntary movements like twitching. Loss of muscle tone is the result of the breakdown of muscle fibers and results in a reduction in muscle function. Waste of fluid and tissues decrease resulting in poor blood circulation to all parts of the body. And bradykinesia is the term used for difficulty in muscle coordination and movement.
There have been recent findings on the efficacy of herbal remedies in the treatment of this condition. Studies suggest that certain herbal supplements may reduce the amount of protein that accumulates in the brain and thus may reduce the chances of Parkinson’s symptoms. These include lecithin, carnosine, pterostiloside and d-mannose. These substances help ease the buildup of proteins that accumulate in the brain and may reduce the accumulation of lipid, which may contribute to lipid peroxidation.
One of the common characteristics of this disease is the early symptoms that can be seen at the early stages. Early symptoms may include difficulty in swallowing, uncontrolled shaking, head shaking, loss of balance, loss of movement co-ordination and trembling. Other symptoms include tremors or trembling of the hands and legs. In advanced stages, one may also experience decreased ability to walk, inability to speak or difficulty in swallowing.
Parkinson’s disease progresses through a disorder of the brain. The disease progresses through four phases. The first phase is referred to as Parkinson’s disease with early symptoms. These symptoms include trembling, rigidity, muscle tension, asymmetry and difficulty concentrating.
The second phase of the disease progresses when the brain shows signs of dysfunction caused by the accumulation of protein deposits. This is called the depression phase. As the disease progresses, these symptoms manifest themselves as tremors, loss of balance, poor muscle coordination and gait problems. With time, the disease may cause irreversible loss of motor coordination.
Parkinson’s disease may affect any part of the body. Some of its most common symptoms are the inability to control body movements and tremor of movement. In addition, one may find difficulty in swallowing and breathing. It is important to note that these problems do not always improve with time. Therefore, it is important to consult your doctor and seek medical help.
The third phase of Parkinson’s disease is characterized by the loss of brain functions. Patients may experience severe and recurrent headaches, a loss in language and a diminished sense of smell. In some cases, Parkinson’s patients can also experience partial or total paralysis of facial muscles. It is during the fourth and later part of the disease stage that a number of cognitive symptoms start to appear. One such example is the reduced ability to plan and perform tasks. Your doctor may also advise you to take Lutein and Nobilein if you’re suffering from central nervous system damage and find difficulty in moving your eyes, speaking and seeing.
However, experts believe that early symptoms of Parkinson’s disease are actually quite similar to that of other diseases. Hence, you need not be alarmed if you notice any strange behavior or strange feelings as these will just be the beginning stages. Experts also say that the earlier you detect the presence of Parkinson’s symptoms, the better for you since it will give you time to look for the disease before it progresses too far. If you start to notice the early symptoms, it is best to visit your doctor. It is advisable to start monitoring your movements, speech and even your balance. Since these symptoms may appear almost anywhere on your body, it is important to monitor everything.
It has been studied that Lutein and Nobilein can help ease the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. According to studies, it has been found that these two vitamins can help prevent the brain cells from getting damaged. When damaged neurons are released into the circulation, it can result to inflammation of the brain. This may increase the difficulty of the sufferer’s movement. Thus, proper intake of these vitamins may help ease the disease’s progression.
Since Parkinson’s symptoms are often accompanied by shaking, dizziness, rigidity and slurred speech, it is very important to seek medical help. Even if you think that you are just experiencing mild symptoms, you should immediately consult a doctor. Early treatment is highly recommended to avoid further complications. While medications may help control the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, there are still several lifestyle changes that you can make to prevent the disease’s progress.
