Parkinson’s disease, sometimes referred to as Parkinson’s syndrome, is a neurological disorder affecting the central nervous system. It is a progressive disorder of the central nervous system that results in a loss of motor coordination and movement problems leading to the limitation of one’s ability to carry out even routine activities. The diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease can be made through a range of tests including brain scans of the patient. There are several forms of medication that can be prescribed for the patient in order to control the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, but patients should also consider other treatments for Parkinson’s symptoms such as physical therapy.

Parkinson’s symptoms can result in difficulty walking, slurred speech, tremors or loss of balance. The slower rate of progress of Parkinson’s disease means that symptoms may occur later in the Parkinson’s disease than other forms of Parkinson’s disease. Some people may exhibit early signs of Parkinson’s disease, only to experience worsening symptoms later in the disease. Because the cause of Parkinson’s disease is not known, the exact treatment for each patient will vary. For some people, daily walking can help to relieve the symptoms of Parkinson’s, while others may need more intense therapy. Physical therapy and occupational therapy, or use of a caregiver, are often recommended by physicians to help sufferers to control symptoms of Parkinson’s.

Parkinson’s symptoms may include wobbling, shaking of the arms or legs, a slowed speech or abnormal behavior such as weaving in and out of the movement. In some cases, Parkinson’s symptoms may include depression, irritability, anxiety, depression, anxiety, apathy or irritability. The early symptoms of Parkinson’s disease may be subtle or it may be accompanied by more serious conditions. If you have any of the following symptoms, you should contact your physician as soon as possible:

Tremor: A tremor is a slow, rhythmic jerk or twitching of one’s limbs. Because the tremor may affect motor functions such as climbing stairs, moving from one room to another or picking up objects, Parkinson’s disease patients frequently confuse it with Parkinson’s. Tremor can begin even when a person is physically active. It tends to become worse in warm weather and can worsen to the point where patients can no longer perform ordinary daily tasks. Because the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease can also occur in early stages of depression, emotional stress and other factors, you may want to consider seeking psychological assistance to help you cope with the disease.

Loss of Muscle Control: Parkinson’s disease symptoms often involve an impairment of the muscles that control balance and coordination. Balance and coordination are two essential functions of the brain. Parkinson’s symptoms can also involve a loss of muscle control. A Parkinson’s patient may start losing muscle control at an early age, or may only lose some muscle control overlying the loss of coordination. Because motor skills are so important to everyday life, losing control of these skills can significantly interfere with day-to-day activities.

Incontinence: Parkinson’s disease can also lead to early symptoms of incontinence. The difficulty with urinary control is most often experienced by women. Incontinence can be a result of Parkinson’s symptoms, but it is not always the case. A Parkinson’s patient who is experiencing urinary incontinence should consult their doctor to find out if the incontinence is directly related to Parkinson’s.

Mood Swings: Many times, the emotional aspects of Parkinson’s can overshadow the non-motor symptoms of the disease. People can become extremely sad or irritated without a tremor first becoming apparent. When these types of mood swings occur it is important to consult a medical professional. However, because there are no known cures for Parkinson’s, patients can take steps to manage their symptoms including medication and psychotherapy.

These are some of the more common side effects of medication used to treat Parkinson’s disease. Others may help ease Parkinson’s symptoms. These natural treatments are often quite effective. For sufferers of Parkinson’s, taking care of yourself through diet and exercise can make living with the disease much easier. Early diagnosis is important in order to get proper treatment and to prevent Parkinson’s from progressing.
