Stroke symptom can be caused by many different factors. Stroke is the third largest cause of death in the United States. The five percent disability rate per year is much higher than many other major health problems. Because it is so common, knowing a few key strokes symptoms can help you recognize if you are having a stroke.
Stroke symptoms do not always follow a straight path. They often take time to develop and progress. They can suddenly appear without warning. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is imperative that you seek medical attention as soon as possible. Following are some of the most common stroke symptoms:
Balance issues Anytime you have trouble walking or maintaining your balance for any length of time you could be experiencing a stroke symptom. Walking, even stairs, can become a challenge. It is difficult to balance on a straight surface with your arms and legs. The best way to avoid symptoms like this is to practice walking regularly and use a stair lift whenever possible.
Cessation of activities A stroke occurs when the brain ceases to function properly. Some of the symptoms of a stroke are difficulty walking or talking, loss of balance, dizziness or a weak current of thought. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms and one side is weaker than the other, it is important that you should stop whatever it is you are doing and immediately call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
Loss of sensation One side of your body may feel like it is paralyzed or it feels as if it is being cut off from the rest of the body. This is usually one side of the arm or the leg. Another type of stroke symptom is loss of sensation in that area. When a person suffers from a loss of sensation in either one side of the body they may be at risk for difficulty speaking, writing, or walking. This symptom is usually not noticed until much later, which is why it is so vital to call 911 immediately.
Limitation of movements Another symptom of a stroke is the inability to move one side of the body. You may notice that you cannot pick up your shirt or tie your pants. Other people who have experienced a stroke may notice that they can no longer control their head or eyes. When a person has difficulty moving one side of their body, it can be difficult to remember things or to feed themselves.
Severe headache In addition to the loss of sensation, some people who suffer from strokes may notice that they experience severe headaches after they have suffered a stroke. This is a very important symptom because it will help you determine whether you need to seek emergency care or whether there is another more serious problem. One of the most common medications used for treating severe headaches is triptans. Doctors do not recommend using this drug for migraines because of the potential side effects it could cause. Severe headaches that are preceded by a stiff neck and a feeling of fatigue are good indicators that you might be suffering from a stroke.
Increased risk factors One of the biggest risk factors for having a stroke is high blood pressure. If you already have high blood pressure then you are at risk for a stroke. One of the most common ways to treat this condition is with diuretics such as alfalfa. A stroke is also very common in people who smoke. Cigarette smoking increases the risk of a stroke because smoking decreases the volume of oxygen-rich blood that is in the brain, while smoking increases the amount of carbon monoxide in the blood, which can be harmful to the brain.
