Parkinson’s disease, also known as Parkinsonism, is a neurological disorder characterized by involuntary movements of the body. The movement disorders affect the central nervous system, which provides the body with the necessary functions for movement. Parkinson’s symptoms are divided into two categories: namely, motor and sensory. Parkinson’s symptoms may appear at any time, even during sleep.
Motor symptoms include bradykinesia or rigidity of movement. The rigidity relates to difficulty in coordinating muscle movements. It can affect speech as well as fine movements. The most common motor symptoms observed in Parkinson’s sufferers are: stiff muscles, poor muscle tone, tremor, loss of balance, bradykinesia and rigidity.
Apart from these, early symptoms include: slowed movement, loss of balance, difficulty in walking, bradykinesia or rigidity, slowing of speech and eyesight. Some patients experience early symptoms before the disease gets advanced. In addition, some people with Parkinson’s may also experience early symptoms such as sweaty palms or dry mouth. These symptoms are indicative of the early stages of Parkinson’s disease and can be treated accordingly. However, if the tremor or the rigidity persists, then you should consult your doctor.
Symptoms related to the brain are not very clear cut. Parkinson’s disease develops through various changes in the brain. There are various causes for these changes. One of the most common is the loss of dopamine, a chemical that helps regulate muscle contraction. Due to this, the nerve impulses do not travel properly along the neurons. The stiffness that accompanies the disease progresses when the concentration of dopamine in the brain drops below the normal level.
Medication can be used for treating the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. The most common medication used to treat the tremor and rigidity is the dopamine releaser drugs. This medication is given to people suffering from the early stages of Parkinson’s. This medication allows the brain to regain the ability to produce dopamine.
Medications like bromelain and melatonin are also used to treat the symptoms of Parkinson’s. Bromelain works by blocking a protein that is produced by the herpes virus. This protein is responsible for transporting dopamine to the neurons. On the other hand, melatonin is effective in treating seasonal tremor. This is because it improves the function of the photoreceptors in the brain.
Other than medications, there are also a few natural methods that can help treat the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. One method is through physical exercises. Physical inactivity is one of the factors that triggers the first motor signs and symptoms of Parkinson’s. People with Parkinson’s should practice movement and exercise regularly to improve their health and the quality of their life. Aside from that, they would also be able to alleviate some of the stiffness and rigidity.
The treatment of Parkinson’s disease involves many factors. It is always important that the patient should consult a specialist and undergo a thorough physical and neurological exam. There are instances that the doctor may ask you to do certain exercises. These exercises should be done under the supervision of your physician. These non-motor symptoms of Parkinson’s should never be overlooked, since these symptoms may involve problems in the functions of your body.
Parkinson’s symptoms may include rigidity, swelling in the limbs, difficulty in performing simple movements, and difficulty in controlling your tongue or swallowing. There are also cases wherein the patients are unable to perform certain tasks including tying shoes or walking. Since these symptoms are non-motor in nature, the patients will experience difficulty in achieving balance and coordination. They may also experience difficulty in seeing colors, shapes, and the objects around them.
It is always important to seek medical attention for Parkinson’s disease symptoms especially if these symptoms are persistent and bothersome. There are times when there is no known cure for Parkinson’s disease. There are certain treatments however, that can help alleviate some of these symptoms. Treatment for these symptoms includes counseling, occupational and physical therapy, and medications. Treatment options may differ from one person to another depending on how severe the symptoms of Parkinson’s are.
You should also learn about the risks involved with this disorder. Parkinson’s has a greater chance of developing in people who have family members with this disorder, have poor health conditions, have diseases that affect the nervous system like diabetes, or those with poor nutrition. Those at higher risk factors for developing Parkinson’s are people who have Parkinsons symptoms since early adulthood. If you do not want to be a carrier of Parkinson’s, you should lower your risks by avoiding alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, and other toxins.
