Cancer is common not only in old adults but almost every type of cancer can happen at this age group, and curing these cancers can sometimes be quite difficult. In fact, most cancers occur in elderly adults. The most common cancers in elderly people are colon, skin, lung, breast (in females), and prostate (in males). There are also childhood cancers, like leukemia, lymphoma, and others, which usually affect younger people.
As we have mentioned, most of these cancers generally occur in elderly people and only rarely in children or young people. In many cases, symptoms of these types of cancers can only be detected after they have progressed to more advanced stages. These symptoms, however, do not often lead to death. If these symptoms occur in adults and they are left untreated, there is a chance that the person will survive cancer. However, if these symptoms are detected during the early stages, treatment options are more open, because it may lead to a cure or prolong life until more aggressive cancer treatments are used.
When speaking of the main types of cancers, the most common ones are skin cancer, which mainly occur in the epidermis, as well as the two main types of breast cancer, both invasive and non-invasive. The main types of colon cancer are adenocarcinoma, malignant polyps, and colon carcinomas. Skin cancer can also occur anywhere on the body, although it is most often found on the face, neck, hands, legs, stomach, genitals, and arms.
One of the main types of childhood cancers is bone cancer. It usually occurs in the vertebrae and the bones surrounding it, such as ribs, vertebrae, and pelvic bones. This type of cancer is very rare and is usually treated using surgery. When it is caught early enough, it is possible to treat it with chemotherapy or radiation. Treatment for bone cancer usually involves chemotherapy and radiation.
When speaking of the common types of cancers, another one of them is squamous cell carcinoma, which occurs mainly in younger adults and teenagers. Melanoma, the second most common type of cancer, is usually seen in people over the age of fifty. When melanoma is present in someone older than fifty, it is called malignant melanoma.
The third most common cancer among people of all ages is lung cancer. It usually occurs in older adults and teenagers and is caused by the action of asbestos. Other common types of this disease include lung adenocarcinoma and pulmonary sarcomas. When talking about common cancers, it usually means a cancer that affects the lungs, such as emphysema or bronchitis. In fact, almost all types of lung cancer are related to exposure to asbestos. Some types of it may be life-threatening and therefore need to be monitored by a doctor constantly.
The types of cancers that occur more frequently in younger adults and teenagers than in the elderly are rectal and anal cancer, which often start in childhood. Women, in general, have a greater risk of contracting these types of cancers. Rectal cancer can start in adolescence or early adulthood, while anal cancer often starts in childhood or adolescence. The risk factors for these types of cancers are the same for women as for men. The difference is that the risk factors for women are often inherited from the mother, while the risks are different for men. Therefore, some families may have a lower rate of rectal cancer, while others may have an increased risk.
All types of cancer are serious. They not only affect the body, but they can also affect a person’s social life and quality of life. Because of this, people who have had cancer, or are currently living with someone who has had cancer, are at higher risk for certain types of cancer in the future. People who have had or currently have cancer should consult their doctor regularly, especially if they have had any type of cancer. Regular checkups can help to reduce the risk for these common cancers among adults.
