Cancer is certainly not uncommon in younger adults, but there a wide array of different cancer types may occur in this age group and treating them can sometimes be difficult. Most all cancers occur in elderly adults. The most prevalent cancers in elderly individuals are lung, prostate, skin, bladder and colorectal cancers. The risk for contracting cancer increases with age. The risk of developing a cancer in your lifetime is about one in twenty.
Types of cancers that occur less often in younger people are leukemia and lymphoma. Leukemia is a blood cancer that occurs mostly in children and is more common in girls than in boys. Lymphoma is a cancer of lymphatic tissue and is most common in people over fifty years and older. Many types of lymphomas – including both Hodgkin’s disease and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma – do not occur very often in younger adults. Most of the cancer occurring in older adults occurs in those are over fifty years old.
Cancers are divided into two broad categories, those that originate inside the body versus those that develop outside the body. They also can be classified as a solid tumor or a liquid tumor. Solid tumors tend to spread through the body and are more likely to remain undiagnosed until they have reached an advanced stage. Liquid cancers generally show up on examination and can be more difficult to remove. There are many different types of cancer that start or grow out of the body.
The most common type of cancer that develops in men is testicular cancer. This occurs when tumors develop in testicles, causing malformation like masses and lesions, sometimes with accompanying infertility. The most obvious signs of this kind of tumor are small lumps in the scrotum or testicles.
Leukemia is another of the most common types of cancer among adults. This is caused by a disorder in the blood producing system and affects nearly every adult, although it affects women slightly more than men. Symptoms include high fevers, fatigue, frequent infections, weight loss, constant tiredness, frequent diarrhea, dark circles under the eyes, painful joints, and paleness around the eyes.
Lung, laryngeal, bladder, and colorectal cancers are all common in adults over thirty years of age. They occur most frequently in smokers and are more common in those with advanced ages. Symptoms include chronic coughing with or without blood, shortness of breath, and abdominal pain. Although some symptoms may occur instead in younger people, such as fatigue and minor infections, the presence of at least a few of these signs in an older person indicates that the cancer has probably already developed. Other signs of these types of cancers include persistent fatigue, frequent earaches, persistent diarrhea, persistent vomiting, persistent skin problems, and abdominal swelling.
Two of the most common types of cancer in adults in the United States are leukemia and lymphomas. Leukemia affects the bone marrow and results in abnormal growths in the bone marrow. Some symptoms of leukemia are bone pain, weight loss, persistent tiredness, frequent infections, and swelling of the face. Lymphomas are a result of infection with the lymphatic system, which occurs most commonly in younger children and often affects the lungs.
There are also other less common types of cancers and their effects on the lives of Americans. Frequent lung infections cause about two thousand deaths a year, largely associated with chronic bronchitis, emphysema, asthma, and chronic obstruction of the airway. Many of these deaths could be prevented if the correct measures were taken to control infections of this type. Prostate, ovarian, cervical, and colorectal cancers are responsible for many more reported deaths than are breast and cervical cancer.
