In the United States, the leading types of cancers among children and teens (ages 0 to 17) are laryngeal cancer, which is cancer of the voice box; throat cancer, which is cancer of the lymph nodes that usually show up in people over 50; skin cancer, which usually show up around the face; and bronchial cancer, which is cancer of the air sacs in the lungs. Overall, for children and teens (ages 0 to 17) in the United States, most of the common types of cancers were also found in other countries around the globe, and these included anal cancer, cervical cancer, lung cancer, leukemia, lymphoma, and head and neck cancer. These are the types of cancer that we commonly hear about in the news today. There are also other types of cancers that are less publicized that can be just as deadly. Research has shown that these less publicized forms of cancer have a much higher death rate than the more publicized ones.
Adults have the chance to lower their risk of some types of childhood cancers, such as leukemia, lymphoma, and skin cancer, if they eat a healthy diet, get regular exercise, and do not smoke. However, adults still face the same risks of these diseases as children. Adults are at an even higher risk for all cancers combined, including colon, breast, cervical, and stomach cancer. They are also more likely to die from these diseases, although deaths due to all cancers combined have decreased steadily since 1990.
The number one cause of death in the United States for both children and adults is cancer. The leading types of cancer for children are cancer of the: stomach, esophagus, and lung. The number one cause of death for adults is cancer of the: breast, lung, and prostate. One of the biggest concerns for older adults is lung cancer. Most of these cancers begin in childhood and later spread, resulting in death. Some cancers of adults, such as skin cancer, can be successfully treated if caught in time; unfortunately, most cancers are not discovered until it is too late.
Brain Tumors. Brain tumors are typically diagnosed when they are very small, but they can grow and continue to grow without causing any symptoms. These types of tumors tend to be slow growing and can cause difficulty breathing or swallowing. Two of the most common types of brain cancers are glomus tumors and meningiomas.
Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Lymphoma is the second most common cancer among adults over the age of 50. The symptoms for non-Hodgkins lymphoma include persistent pain in the body, unexplained weight loss, fever, and unexplained scarring, particularly on the neck or hips. The symptoms for spinal cord tumors include persistent headaches, unexplained vomiting, numbness or tingling in the arms and legs, and unexplained muscle weakness. Both of these types of lymphoma can be quite serious, so they should be checked out immediately by a doctor.
As with other forms of cancer, there are many types of brain cancers that are difficult to detect. The most common type of brain tumor is called a glomus tumor, which develops when abnormal growth forms in a part of the brain called the cerebellum. Many times, this type of tumor does not cause any problems, but when it becomes cancerous, it changes the normal cells it is made of, making it harder to treat. An example of a glomus tumor is seen in a form called the medullar nodule. It usually begins as a bump on the surface of the brain, but may later develop into a tumor.
There are also several other types of lymphoma. One of the more common ones is called lymphoma that develops in the Hodgkin’s disease (HD) or lymphoma that affects the Thymus glands (Thymus teratoma). Other forms of lymphoma include: leukemia, lymphomas in the bone marrow, cervical cancer, and anal cancer. Many of these forms of cancer are extremely aggressive and have high survival rates. However, they can also be very distressing to the patients who have them.
Some types of cancer can be traced to very common causes such as exposure to certain chemicals. These include: asbestos, certain pesticides, and benzene, to name a few. When it comes to the types of cancer that are the result of exposure to radiation, the leading contributors are: lung cancer, bladder cancer, and breast cancer. Overall, it is estimated that the types of cancer that can be linked to radiation are: lung cancer, leukemia, and cervical cancer.
